With this beautiful weather showing up in our fair city, it seems that we can celebrate the summer in a wonderfully unique way. This starts with “Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville.” Thanks to Theatre Calgary we can croon out some classic island tunes in this funny musical production.
The story follows Tully; a carefree charmer who makes his living singing at the dive bar on an island resort. When he is not on the stage, he is showing all the female guests a good time. He thought that he would be doing this for the rest of his life and let time just drift away. However, his plans change when he meets and falls for an independent, ambitious scientist named Rachel.
However, it is not just his love story but also another island bound couple might get together as well. This is Tully’s not-so-bright best friend named Brick and Rachel’s flirty companion, Tammy. These two have their own obstacles to get through including Brick’s fear of practically everything and Tammy’s selfish fiancée.
So, things are getting tricky for these couples from goofy autopilots, feisty bosses, and a volcano that can erupt at any moment. Luckily with the power of love, music, and a few margaritas they might be able to get through those tough times together.
This play is filled with toe-tapping fun, a sweet story, and a taste of summertime which is just around the corner for us Calgarians. And it is the flavour of lime and tequila. So, you don’t have to be a parrot-head to enjoy this play. If you are a lover of music, rom-coms, and lovable characters then rejoice! This show has all of this and more. The actors provided a believable and heartfelt performance to their roles that you will think about every time you hear one of these spritely songs.
If you are looking for a fun night out with friends, have a hot date, or just an excuse to feel some tropical vibes without leaving the city, this is the way to do it. Watching Escape to Margaritaville was like going on vacation but without having to get on a plane to do so. It was full of positivity, joy, and a touch of romance. This is something we all look for when we go on an adventure. This play is an adventure.
There is only one question that needs to be answered. What would Jimmy Buffett think of this musical? Would it be a reflection of his life? Or something that he has seen time and again? One thing for sure is that his music shines on a stage. It inspires people to not only relax and enjoy the moment but to never give up on their dreams. It doesn’t take a diehard fan to see that inspiration can be found anywhere you are whether it is a deserted tropical island or a frozen city filled with flurries.
