Hello, Cinco De Mayo!

I Saw the Sign

A long battle is done and it is time to celebrate! The armies of Mexico fought long and hard in the Battle of Puebla against France, Spain, and Britain for their freedom. Everyone wanted a piece of them but Mexico won in the end, thanks to General Ignacio Zaragoza. That is what this famous Mexican holiday is all about and more power to them. Who doesn’t want to celebrate a victory when someone tries to take over your country? And what better way to remember a big historical event than fiesta-ing it up?

It starts with getting free tequila shots at Tropical on 17th. (Drinking it down right now.) Whoop! That hits you like a flying hockey puck to the head! It’s still good though. You hear a lively Latin tune in the air that calls you to the dance floor. Sadly, there is no dance floor but that doesn’t stop you. You sit in your seat and sway to the sounds of the mariachis in the room.

This way!

The fun doesn’t stop there. It’s time to go to the Chakalaka rooftop bar and enjoy the fact that this is the first time this year that it is open in the first place. Finally, we can enjoy some fresh air and warm weather. A nice drink comes with some loud music. It’s an expensive place so I opt to get their cassava chips. They are pretty tasty with the zesty chipotle mayo that they gave me. Always good to have a little zip in your life.

After that was finished, it’s time to make our way to the Honey Lounge for all of our carnival needs. Margaritas, churros, and beef tacos are on the menu. Not to mention a DJ who not only spins some great modern tunes but plays them on a saxophone. It’s always great to have dinner and a show! And their margherita flatbread pizza is just the thing to enjoy with the colorful atmosphere around us.

Play on!

However, there is something to be said about the street tacos of Chilitos Taberna. With their happy hour prices ($3.50) per taco, you will leave this place with a smile. I had the pleasure of ordering the mushroom, picadillo, and bean tacos. I only wish I had more. The mixture of flavors was all different but they worked well together. The cheesiness of the bean taco warmed my belly with sharp tastes and soft textures. The rich taste of the mushroom melts in your mouth like a hot knife through butter. And last but not least, the picadillo taco is like eating a fresh, cozy ratatouille in a savory wrap. Not to mention you will want to combine both the green and red salsas together to get a real kick out of it!

After all that wonderful food, you realize that something is missing. The night doesn’t feel complete. In order to finish the night why not do some dancing in the moonlight? The Moonlight Lounge and Bar, that is. Get to listen to some serious beats, see some swirling lights, and dance until the day ends. Let the music take you over.

Taco Time!

A lot of lessons can be learned from history, that’s why it is always good to remember what had happened. Sometimes the best history lesson is the one where we celebrate what we have in the present thanks to those who fought for it in the past. Cinco De Mayo reminds us that we have a lot to be thankful for. Until next year! Adios amigos.
